India

State Boards

There are numerous secondary and higher secondary school boards in India that administer grade 10 and grade 12 leaving examinations. There is no mandated national grading scale in use in secondary education.

The state school boards use a variety of grading scales, with the percent scale being the most common one; the percent grade is often associated with an overall class. The grading scale used is usually indicated on the reverse of the certificate.

Mongolia

Prior to 1998, a single 5-point grading scale was used at all levels of education: 5 (excellent), 4 (good), 3 (satisfactory), or 2 (unsatisfactory/fail).

Grades of 5, 4, and 3 were passing grades. The grade of 2 was not a passing grade and was rarely seen on academic records. There were not grades of 1 or 0.

In 1998, MOSTEC implemented a new grading scale at the post-secondary level. This scale follows a U.S.-style 4-point scale with grades of A, B, C, D, and F and numerical equivalents of 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. In some cases, the grade of F is not used. If this is the case, then the D grade is given a value of 0. In this case, the grades from the pre-1998 system are easily converted to the new system.

Note: Prior to 2011, the predominant scale used in Kazakhstan at both the secondary and post-secondary scale was the Soviet 5-point scale where 3 was the minimum pass. Grades could have been reported numerically, in Russian, in Kazakh, or in some cases, in English. In April 2011, the Ministry of Education and Science established a standardized U.S.-style 4-point/A-F scale and established a concordance between these new scales, the Soviet 5-point scale and the ECTS grading scale. A student who fails an exam is required to repeat the entire year of studies. The new grade will replace the failing grade on the final academic record.
