How are GPAs calculated in CollegeVine's Transcript Reader?

CollegeVine’s Transcript Reader can create a custom GPA calculation aligned to your internal calculation. Following the kick off, we will schedule a discovery session to ensure we understand the requirements for your calculation method.

We will use the following three components to create an initial starting point for the GPA Calculation, and then can

  1. Confirm included courses - The course selector determines which courses from a student’s transcript are included in the GPA calculation (e.g., all courses, academic courses only, or academic plus AP/IB courses)

  2. Confirm included grades - The grade selector identifies whether its all grades listed on the transcript, or a subset (i.e six semester, excluding middle school)

  3. Determine GPA formula - Choose between different GPA scales:

    • 4-point scale: Traditional 0-4.0 GPAs

    • Percentage scale: 0-100 percentage-based GPA system

    • Specialized formula: Custom systems like percentage with credit bonuses or unweighted course averaging

  4. Configure formula - Confirm specific mapping and weighting configurations:

    • Letter grade mapping: Convert letter grades (A, B, C, etc.) to numerical values

    • Percentage grade mapping: Convert percentage grades to scale points using thresholds

    • Course specific weightings: Add bonus points for advanced courses (AP, IB, Honors, etc.)

If you commenced processing transcripts prior to April 2026, you will have received a custom calculation aligned to a code name. See articles here and here for more details on this.
